The Evolution of a Career

They say that hindsight is 20/20. And it is true! If I look at the choices I made in high school, it is now apparent that I was destined for a career in Web Development. While picking my free electives, I exhausted all of the computer courses. AutoCad, Animation and Robotics. There were no "internet" courses as usage was not publicly adopted yet. I didn't even have an email address. But, I was setting the groundwork for a lifetime of "work" that feels more like "play".

What's In A Link?

A new web designer posed the question: "They have a page that lists local attractions in the area as they are near a few parks and campgrounds. I linked the attractions' websites on the page. The client is concerned about getting permission for this and was wondering if we can get compensated or have them list us on their pages. I was wondering if you knew if there are any laws about having links to other sites on your site."

My response

Get It From The Source

My favorite techie just informed me of a successful small business. After a life rubbing elbows in high-rise offices across the globe, this woman has reinvented her career and found her inner entrepreneur. Good for us, she has a blog that shares her experiences and endeavors.

The Student

I have stumbled across some articles regarding pro-bono work. The authors are quite jaded at times. My thoughts are that many new designers/developers do want some small projects to add to their portfolio. And often they are willing to do these sites at a reduced rate. But there should be a rate, whether it is cash, trade of services, a pizza or a bottle of wine. Creating a successful website takes time and a designer/developer should be compensated for such. I think the most important thing is to outline expectations in the beginning.

So, You Want To Start A Business

Congratulations on starting a business!

I have so many thoughts that I want to share with you; I am just going to list them. You might have already considered these, but I wish that I had a list like this when I started.
