WordPress Revelations

The Evolution of a Career

They say that hindsight is 20/20. And it is true! If I look at the choices I made in high school, it is now apparent that I was destined for a career in Web Development. While picking my free electives, I exhausted all of the computer courses. AutoCad, Animation and Robotics. There were no "internet" courses as usage was not publicly adopted yet. I didn't even have an email address. But, I was setting the groundwork for a lifetime of "work" that feels more like "play".

CMS Demystified

A content management system (CMS) facilitates the tasks required to deliver information on the web by separating the content from the structure and design of the site.

Speechless

"SqueakyArmadillo" so generously "bought me a latte". Thank you very much for your support. Your gesture is appreciated more than you know. Thank you again!

Earning Pennies

Now that I am a free consulting business, my income has decreased. I just don't have the time for large projects on the side anymore. However, I have implemented a couple features on my site that will hopefully contribute something.

Yeahs and Nays

The Yeahs

Cybelle Design has been relaunched with a whole new look. I am happy with the results. This was more of a development task a than a design task, as I created the theme from scratch with all of the dynamic areas. I have learned so much about the WordPress framework and am looking forward to becoming a master. In the mean time, I am hoping to find some inspiration with my header and footer areas. I like my new logo, but the rest of the site pales in comparison to such bling. Please send me thoughts!

The Nays

Setting Up My Page Headers

I have been fiddling with they types of pages being displayed (single post, date archives, category). The info in the codex has been very helpful. However, as I play with my margins and padding for the description, I realize that my authentic IE6 and Standalone IE7 like to cache my stylesheet. My red boxes haven't moved - and they are still red (which I removed 2 uploads ago).

Quite a Bummer : Search Function

It appears that WordPress's search functionality only searches posts and not pages.

Wannabe Designer

In my couch marathon today, I was also able to finalize the structure of my site - and I redid my logo. I still need to add some more pizazz to the design, especially now that my logo is so full of bling. I tried using NiftyCorners, but to no avail. It cannot figure out what colors to blend around the corners due to layers of semi-transparent pngs underneath. Bummer.

Frustrations Ensue

I am glad today is cloudy!

I spent entirely too long debugging my RSS feed. And what was the gross error? A couple extra spaces at the end of my functions file. So that was a bummer of lost time.

My First Experience

This is my first experience working with WordPress, and I have to say, I am impressed. It is a framework that serves 2 entirely distinct groups. For starters, you can install and go. Pick a theme and start typing. For the average user, it is a fabulous way to have a website. But there is a second layer. WordPress is a rather customizable CMS in disguise. For the mid-level programmer (HTML, CSS, basic PHP), you can create a theme that a basic end-user can add to (via drag-n-drop) through the use of widgets. So, as I am writing this, I have much more to learn.
